The party deliberates on the best course of action in regard to the potential of another gaping maw hole opening up in the same place where it did the previous day. They pound the area, hammer it, and even try to put their ear to it to see if anything is amiss. All that and more on the 50th episode of our show!

Episode 70 – The United States of Isengard

Fantasy helps us to make sense of a chaotic reality, and Sam shows us how Lord of the Rings can help us make sense of the protests and know how to be on the side of good.

When the Ents marched on Isengard, Gandalf checked his privilege and didn’t stand with Sarumon.

Justin Timberlake: Friends with Benefits (2011)

We survived the month of May and now it’s time to say goodbye to our man JT. Well, until we watch another one of his movies that is. Anyway, we decided the best way to end the month was by watching the romantic comedy Friends With Benefits. No…you’re thinking of No Strings Attached. This is the other rom-com about two friends deciding to keep their sex casual while ultimately falling in love. It’s actually kind of good, until you get to the third act. JT and costar Mila Kunis have chemistry all over the place and it’s hard not being charmed by their relationship as it unfolds. A fun and worthwhile watch.

We also discuss Trolls and Wonder Wheel, two JT films that couldn’t be farther apart on the quality spectrum. Spoiler alert: the animated one is your best bet.

The Other Voices: Blindspotting

Last night I watched BLINDSPOTTING.

Written by its stars, Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal, and directed by Carlos Lopez Estrada, this 2018 film is about a black man and convicted felon at the end of his probation, trying desperately to avoid trouble in Oakland while his white best friend tries as hard as he can to start it.

I know this column, which I cruelly abandoned a few months ago with every intention of getting back to it soon (I AM going to finish my opus on 50 Shades), is supposed to be primarily about directors, so I’ll give a nod to Estrada, who cut his teeth on short films, music videos, and TV episodes before being given BLINDSPOTTING as his feature debut, so although he’s not a household name, he had a ton of experience before he walked onto this set, and this film appears to have raised his profile.

Chapter 49 – An Icky Ichor Encounter

The fight rages on against the abyssal vrocks and the giant barlgura. Even with decent odds, survival isn’t certain. There’s also the issue of all that black ichor keeping these creatures together. What in the nine hells is going on?

Corona Cartoons: The Secret of NIMH

This week on Corona Cartoons we’re discussing the Don Bluth film The Secret of NIMH, which marks his departure from Disney and the beginning of quite the interesting pivot in his filmography. If the name doesn’t sound familiar to you, the films might. From here he went on to do An American Tail, Land Before Time, Rock-A-Doodle, as well as the video games Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace. This movie is also maybe linked to our love of rats in general. A great episode and a fun discussion. We also give an update to the status of Corona Cartoons and the upcoming Frisky Dingo podcast.
