The tableau is pure chaos. Nine hellfire riders advance upon the four tiefling, and once again a tear in the fabric of reality has spit out abyssal spawn. As if that weren’t enough, a flying galleon has just broken the cloud cover, seemingly in pursuit of the riders. Get ready for some serious shit.

The Other Voices: Booksmart

Every time someone I follow on Twitter watches director Olivia Wilde’s 2019 film BOOKSMART, they immediately rave about it and order everyone who reads their tweet to see it. So I finally saw it. And I agree one hundred percent: SEE IT. It’s even on Hulu right now, so just go watch it. I’m not gonna spoil it, so this article is safe for you to read, but as soon as it’s done, you need to see this film. Or go watch it now and come back after.
OK? OK.
I’m just gonna dive right in by saying that this is one of the best edited films I’ve ever seen. Editor Jamie Gross makes such judicious choices with where to let the story breathe and where to get cheeky. When filmmakers talk about voice – this film has it in spades. Even the music choices keep the momentum going when the story slows down. All this comes together in post – but it can’t happen unless the right shots were filmed on the day. And to that vision, we can credit Wilde and her cinematographer, Jason McCormik.

7.05: The Inamorata Consequence
This week on the podcast Bryan Dressel, Graham “H.E.L.P.eR. MOD-2” Mason, and Matt “Corporal Snoopy” Dykes talk The Inamorata Consequence, which is quite enjoyable…unless you’re Matt. The Guild of Calamitous Intent and the OSI renegotiate their contract, Hank reunites with Dermot, and Dean goes back to the place where he learned that he and Hank were clones…only to find out that Rusty was ALSO A CLONE. Oh, and did you know that H.E.L.P.eR. MOD-2 was voiced by Rhys Darby? Fun!

I haven’t been all that interested in music exploration for years now, letting that hobby languish in favor of others such as movies, videogames, television, and most recently Dungeons & Dragons. I’m not hip with the latest indie music releases, and I haven’t been to a show at the Echoplex in years. At this point, anything new I come across is strictly accidental. However, I’ve started taking an interest in older music, and I owe that completely to film. Case in point: From Here to Eternity, by Giorgio Moroder.
Came across this album via Gaspar Noé’s 2018 perverted Busby Berkeley fever-dream psychological horror film CLIMAX, which has an amazing soundtrack to go along with its delightfully alarming visuals. One track in particular stood out:
I quite enjoy the likes of Daft Punk, Justice, Ratatat, and The Chemical Brothers and all of my favorites from their works claim Giorgio as an influence, whether they explicitly state that or not. So, I decided to check out this album and start digging into this musical blind spot, and wow was I rewarded for my efforts.
From Here To Eternity came out in 1977, and it’s really cool to be able to connect the dots between the music I enjoy today with its influences. You should really check it out.

7.03: Arrears in Science
This week on the podcast, Bryan Dressel, Graham “Dr. Z” Mason, and Matt “Sgt. Hatred” Dykes take for F*CKING ever to get the episode started, but that’s okay because the whole thing involves messing with Matt. And then it’s on to the jam-packed conclusion to the Morphic Trilogy, which has some very “potent” science. Also, Dr. Jonas Venture is just pure evil.
